Dynamic 3D Particle Shape Analysers

Driving performance and efficiency in particulate manufacturing

About Us

A Revolution in Particle Analysis

The Company

Driven by a passion to overcome the limitations of existing particle analysis methods, Dr Sadegh Nadimi and Dr Vasileios Angelidakis created Ocular Systems Limited to commercialise a pioneering 3D particle shape metrology and functional modelling platform developed at the Engineering Department of Newcastle University, UK.

The Mission

Ocular's mission is to improve performance and drive efficiencies in high value particulate-based industries including pharmaceuticals, energy storage, additive manufacturing, construction materials and minerals.

Utilising a unique combination of dynamic 3D imaging and fast functional modelling, the Ocular platform delivers a unique understanding of particle shape and size and its impact on performance and functional properties such as flowability and packing density.

By delivering actionable insights into the performance and manufacturability of particulate materials, Ocular can reduce the number of iterative process development steps required to move from R&D to manufacturing; reducing time to market, costs and waste for our customers.

Products and Services

Dynamic 3D size and shape analysis

Ocular's patented optical particle characterisation system measures each particle in flowing dispersions to rapidly deliver accurate 3D particle size and shape information.

This direct 3D measurement method overcomes limitations of current 2D analysers to provide a more complete and accurate understanding of particle morphology for particle sizes from 1µm to 5mm.

Fast functional modelling

Ocular's proprietary modelling software uses the unique Ocular 3D size and shape inputs to rapidly predict bulk properties such as flowability and packing density

Employing an advanced machine-learning approach trained by micromechanical simulations using a Discrete Element Method, functional properties can now be predicted in a few minutes, enabling rapid product and process development without the need for repeated empirical testing.

Applications

Applicable across all industry sectors

The 3D optical imaging method at the heart of the Ocular System delivers 3D morphology of particulate materials across a diverse range of applications including pharmaceuticals, energy storage materials, agritech, cosmetics, food, chemicals, minerals and construction materials.

Contact us to discuss characterisation capabilities for your formulations.

1µm to 5mm measurement range

Ocular rapidly returns accurate 3D shape and size information for particles from 1µm to 5mm diameter in both dry and wet flowing dispersions.

Particles and agglomerates over 5mm in diameter can also be measured at reduced throughput.

Validated reproducibility and accuracy

The accuracy and repeatability of Ocular 3D shape and size measurement has been verified through consistent characterisation results and close agreement with micro-CT and SEM gold standards.

More details on the performance of Ocular dynamic 3D particle metrology can be found here.
